The City of Vaughan recognizes the value off-leash dog parks bring to dogs and their families. In June 2021, Council endorsed the Local Off-leash Dog Area Strategy (PDF), which identified a need to find secure, fenced-in spaces for pets to safely roam free. Now, after extensive public consultation, five local off-leash dog areas are under construction in the city of Vaughan and are expected to be ready for public use in spring 2022, weather permitting.

The City is now reviewing options for an additional local off-leash dog area to be located east of Bathurst Street to serve the Thornhill community. Three potential locations are available for review:

Engagement on the Thornhill Local Off-Leash Area is now closed.

From Tuesday, March 22 to Tuesday, April 12, the City invited the community to review three potential locations for a new off-leash dog area in the Thornhill community and provide feedback on their desired location.

Thank you to those who participated! While support for a local off-leash dog area in Thornhill was mixed, the survey results demonstrated that York Hill District Park is the preferred location. However, due to concerns raised by some participants in the engagement process, City staff will further assess the feasibility of adding an off-leash area to York Hill District Park – including its location in the park, configuration and design – and community members will have another opportunity to provide input in 2023.

Read the Community Engagement Report (PDF) for a summary of the survey results and feedback collected, as well as next steps.
