The City of Vaughan is undertaking a study to develop the Vaughan Mills Centre Public Realm and Streetscape Plan, which will serve as a comprehensive reference guide to promote high-quality public spaces – both publicly and privately-owned –and a pedestrian-oriented streetscape development in the area.

The space around Vaughan Mills mall – known as the Vaughan Mills Centre – and the lands between Highway 400 and Weston Road south of Rutherford Road include places that are, or will be, accessible to all who travel to and through the area for work or leisure. This refers to streets, lanes, public squares, plazas, sidewalks, cycling lanes, trails, future parks, open spaces and connections to conservation areas.

Collecting feedback from the community is vital to the success of this plan. The feedback collected to date has helped inform a complete public space master plan that reflects safety, accessibility, sustainability and functionality.

This past winter, we invited you to attend a virtual Public Information Session and participate in an online survey to learn more about the purpose of the study, review guiding principles and key elements of the plan, and provide feedback on the proposed ideas for the parks, public spaces and streets around the Vaughan Mills Centre. Here are some highlights of what we heard:

    • The principles guiding the plan reflect what is important to those who plan to use the space.
    • The proposed improvements to Vaughan Mills Centre will attract more walking and cycling in the area.
    • Beautifying, animating and improving connections to public spaces are important to attract pedestrians and cyclists.
    • More seating options that support individual, small group and large group gatherings are needed.
    • Trees, plants and other vegetation are vital to creating a more inviting and friendly setting.
    • Public safety is a key priority for the design of streets and public spaces in the Vaughan Mills Centre.
    • Refinements to the road network and parking lots are needed to improve traffic flow and reduce traffic congestion.
